Browning on evergreens
American Forests, Summer, 2005
Tree Doctor: My wife and I have three evergreens that have started to turn a bit golden and brown on the tips. It looks like some of the ends are dead. We are at a loss about what to do. Somebody told us these particular trees should always be green. Is there a tree doctor that you could recommend who could come and take a look at them?

Howard Burnett responds: There are a number of things that can cause tip-yellowing or -browning on evergreens. The simplest thing is that some species keep their foliage for two years, and as new spring growth starts, two-year-old growth is discarded. Frost damage is another possibility, as is insect or disease infestation, or spray from nearby herbicide jobs. Soil conditions can also affect foliage--most evergreens are acid-loving and may react poorly if the soil is too basic.
